Just hours after receiving the US Secretary of State in Juba – the capital of South Sudan, the President is said to be ‘unhappy’ with the visit after learning that a gift parcel expected to be high quality Texas cowboy hats actually contained cheap low quality Chinese-made replicas.
Citing US sanctions on the world’s newest state, the US Mission to South Sudan emphasized that the targeted sanctions on South Sudan also banned the selling or gifting of American products; and John Kerry could not possibly gift anything made in the USA.
Sources close to the presidency said Pres. Kiir was as excited as a kid on his way to a candy shop before the high profile meeting with John Kerry. The mood quickly changed when the gifts were exchanged.
It is still unclear whether the incident will affect the important role the Obama Administration plans to play in South Sudan and bring the current conflict to a peaceful resolution.
It is believed that Pres. Kiir spends more time deciding which hat to wear on an occasion than he does choosing a tie or a shirt.
